WWE’s AJ on Her New Role as GM, SummerSlam and Teaming up with Scooby-Doo

AUG 17th

WHAT'S NEW WITH AJ?

EXCLUSIVE

If one were to call WWE in 2012 the year of AJ Lee, it would be hard to argue the point. In just a few months, she went from the in-ring girlfriend to Daniel Bryan to the center of what was both a love triangle and love quadrangle involving herself, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Kane – all the while becoming an increasingly popular and crucial part of WWE’s storylines. And recently, she was given a huge role on WWE’s flagship show, RAW, as the General Manager.

A lifelong fan of WWE (not to mention video games and comic books), it’s safe to say AJ has been living her dream of late. She’s also a big animation fan, which makes her inclusion in the just-announced WWE/Scooby-Doo animated movie especially noteworthy.

At last night’s WWE Be a STAR/SummerSlam kick off party, I had the chance to speak to AJ about her very busy year. We began our chat talking about what it’s like working with Scooby-Doo, before moving on to her taking on the GM role, what she’s most excited to see this Sunday at SummerSlam, the wedding that wasn’t between her and Daniel Bryan and more.

AJ Lee Discusses Not Wrestling and Being Backstage At #RAW 1000 !

I will never get naked for Playboy, says WWE diva AJ Lee

AUG 15th

WWE star AJ Lee has disappointed her legion of male admirers by saying that she will never pose nude for Playboy magazine.

“I’ll never, ever, ever do Playboy!”

“I can barely wear a low-cut shirt. I’m a prude and I think that’s what works for me - being very innocent and prudish.

“It’s gotten me pretty far and there are certain things that should be left to the imagination. There’s nothing wrong with it, but it’s not for me,” she added.

As noted yesterday, RAW General Manager AJ Lee was interviewed last Friday by Chad Dukes of 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C. Here are some highlights of the interview:
Being a major on-air character but not wrestling: "I never thought I would open or close Raw and let alone do it multiple times. So it's very surreal and I appreciate that spot and if that means not getting in the ring, I have a whole career for that. Hopefully, I won't have a one year career, you know. So if we can do this now, there's always time to get back in the ring, there will always be a moment, where the time is right. I can put myself in the ring now. I can give myself a title match if I wanted to. So there's time for that and I love wrestling, and I love being in the ring. But if it doesn't work right now it doesn't work right now. It's in my dream to do kinda all of it."
Being backstage at the 1,000th episode of RAW: "The atmosphere backstage, it felt like a WrestleMania. It was so important, and everyone, these people who I've been watching my entire life are backstage, and maybe two years ago, three years ago, I would meet them and they wouldn't know who I was, and they'd be nice and polite and I'd go, 'Oh my god I love you.' So it was really interesting to be kind of a colleague on the same show and to me that was the most mindblowing part. To talk to Paul Heyman, Shawn Michaels, and to have these people who are still watching the show and now they know who I am and we're on the same show together. And to have Mr. McMahon as a part of my wedding, that's something I never thought i would , that's a sentence I never thought I'd say. There was one point where I was walking past in my wedding dress in the same hallway as Trish and Lita. If you wouldhave told 12-year old AJ that, like I would have, my brain would exploded!''

AJ Lee Talks Transitioning From Wrestler To Authority Figure, Kissing Kane & More

Authority Figure: “I never thought I would open or close Raw and let alone do it multiple times. Backstage Atmosphere At RAW 1,000: “The atmosphere backstage, it felt like a WrestleMania. What Kissing Kane Did For Her Character: “That’s kind of like the moment where it all just skyrocketed, ’cause stuff got weird that That’s the stuff like I’m most comfortable with now, I like the weird. I like the moments where, there’s been a lot of moments, there’s actually a poll on dot com, what was my craziest moment. And looking at it you know, I’ve done a lot of out there stuff in the past couple months.”

AJ Lee Discusses Miss Elizabeth, Daniel Bryan, Getting In The Business, Doing Playboy & More

AUG 14th

Current Raw GM AJ Lee was interviewed by Brian Scocia to promote Summerslam and during the intervew, the two discussed a number of interesting things. Among the topics were; AJ growing up a wrestling fan, influences, her greatest WWE moments, getting into the business, whether or not she would ever do Playboy and more. Here are some of the highlights:

On growing up a wrestling fan and idolizing Miss Elizabeth: "It was more of a family interest when I was really young. We would watch Hogan and 'Macho Man'. I've said it before, Miss Elizabeth is my first idol ever. ... It's funny, but for a new generation, [Daniel Bryan and I], what we brought to the table (was the Miss Elizabeth/Randy Savage dynamic) but it kind of works because it's also so completely different. But, I was definitely a huge, huge fan of hers. And Jake 'The Snake' and Roddy Piper. Those are my earliest memories.

"Going into high school, I was a really big fan of Molly and Trish and Lita and Stephanie. So, I've been watching for a really long time and looking up to the women more specifically, dreaming of being them and me mixing the best of them and adding a bit of me and seeing what we could come up with."

On how and when she decided to wanted to get into wrestling: "Me and my brother watched when I was about 11 or 12 and he went to the army. So, I would watch all the episodes and for some reason, I really thought he would want a run down. So, I would write him run downs and send them to him when he was in the army. 'This is what happened on Smackdown! and here's a match.' So, it was our one thing that connected us when he was in the army.

"So, for some reason, I was writing this stuff down in my room and I remember my mom walking by and I said, 'Hey, I'm going to be a wrestler when I grow up!' I decided it right there, I knew it. She was like, 'OK,' and just kept walking. [Laughs.] I don't think people believed me. They kind of thought it was a faze that they thought I would grow out of and they'd make me be a girl one day. But, I was such a tomboy for so long and it just never changed and I never grew out of it. So, I started when I was 18."

On what moment stands out as her "made it" moment: "I think just getting signed would have been enough to me. Really, just being a part of the company, being anything. I still have the first envelope they sent me, the first mail because I keep everything. Just seeing 'WWE' and it's coming in my mail box. I'm just such a fan, you know. I think just getting signed would have been the most amazing thing in the world to me.

"But, everything that's happened so far, already having a WrestleMania moment. That's mind-boggling, I don't even understand it. Hopefully, one of these days, I can sit down and kind of drink it all in. But, it's been kind of go, go, go, for the last year and a half. So, it's still very surreal and I kind of don't believe it still. I'm waiting to wake up. [Laughs.]

On the day she was signed to WWE: "I took the not-very-traditional route and saved up a lot of money and paid to try out. There's this yearly camp where anyone from the independents can just pay to try out. [Derren Young and I] were in the same one. There were 70 guys and four girls and they were all models. I didn't think I had a chance. It was a five day camp and I had to save up all the money I had for months and I actually got signed at the camp. They announced it there at the camp and I literally fell to the floor crying. It was the just moment of my life at that point. That was insane. That was one of the best days of my life, for sure."

GMs on GMs: AJ Lee and Booker T grade each other's initial performances

AUG 14th

A leader should be his or her own toughest critic. Running any organization — a team, a company or, say, a television show — requires a fair hand, a strong sense of morals, and enough absence of ego to realize when, perhaps, your particular course of action might not be the best one.

Clearly, Raw and SmackDown have been in short supply of permanent leadership lately. Now, however, a new era has begun, as Mr. McMahon installed AJ Lee and Booker T as the new GMs of Raw and SmackDown. On paper, the two competitors-turned-suits couldn’t be more different from several of their predecessors, but despite their proven track record, it can still be tough for an authority figure to hold his or herself accountable and be a tough critic of his or her own actions.

So, we at WWE.com had a better idea: We’ll get them to critique each other.

We know. Genius.

RAW Results – August 13, 2012

After WWE Champion, CM Punk defeats Big Show (thanks to the interference of Daniel Bryan, which prompts John Cena to also come out), AJ comes out – looking amazing, as usual. She tells Daniel that he’s still dealing with his anger management issues. She says that he may have ruined this match, but he will make up for it when he teams up with Big Show to face CM Punk and John Cena… later tonight! AJ leaves the four men in the ring, bickering amongst themselves.

We go to commercial and come back to see JTG complaining to Kaitlyn about the show expanding to three hours and him not getting tv time/a match. AJ comes up behind him and asks him what’s wrong. What, he doesn’t think she’s doing a good job? He wants to get in the ring? Well good, AJ tells him to go to the ring now and she’ll find him an opponent. AJ turns to Kaitlyn and asks if Kaitlyn thinks she is unstable, to which Kaitlyn replies that she can think of many words to describe AJ, unstable not being one of them. Kaitlyn leaves AJ, who is happy until she realizes that Kaitlyn didn’t mean that in a good way.

After Shawn Michaels is attacked by Brock Lesnar, we see a load of members of the roster crowding around Shawn’s damaged car. AJ is seen, she obviously has no idea what happened. Triple H asks AJ where Shawn is and she says she has no idea. She tells him that Brock dragged him off, which Triple H responds to with hitting the car in frustration and running off to find Shawn.

Article- The One Diva Revolution

AUG 13th

We’ve been led to believe that Divas are

transitional and will rarely make an impact in

the male dominated industry of professional

wrestling. Girls such as Lita, Trish Stratus &

Stacy Keibler have been able to buck this

trend, but that was at a time when Divas were

used in a variety of ways on WWE television.

Fast forward to 2012, and we are lucky if we

get a minute of Divas action in a 7 hour block

of programming WWE produces on a weekly

basis. The Divas have suffered as a result, with the majority not being used for months on end only to be thrown into a random match- even the Divas champion Layla is not exempt from this neglect. This past year, we’ve seen AJ become the exception to the unwillingly accepted rule, and she is now featured on a regular basis on RAW as the General Manager. AJ stated in her NXT debut that it was about time the word Diva was redefined, and two years on, it seems she’s kept to her promise. To most this will be a crazy statement, but AJ Lee has revolutionised the way in which Divas (and women’s wrestlers in general) are seen…

When you think of Divas, you think of bombshell models that just so happen to beat up other bombshell models for a living. They are able to transition into mainstream media, and their beauty is splashed across many a magazine cover. Let’s compare (arguably) the most successful Diva of all time Trish Stratus to AJ- Trish’s stunning look has led to her gracing over 80 magazine covers, and most fans associate the word Diva to Trish. On the other hand, AJ’s beauty is based off her pride in who she is- she lets everyone know of her…uncommon hobbies and likes, and doesn’t care how they don’t fit the typical mould. One of the things that was mentioned throughout the entries we had for our birthday competition is how AJ is accessible and relatable compared to her predecessors- you are more likely to come across an AJ than a Trish and to have someone like AJ as a poster girl for WWE shows she’s changing the way Divas are perceived.

The hilarious thing is women’s wrestlers who would usually not be associated with the geek stereotype are now trying to turn the nerd look into something sexy. Since when did gorgeous women like Velvet want to admit they’re geeks?! AJ has made girl geeks look cool, and it looks like others are trying to jump on the bandwagon. If you look at the current crop of girls working their way through Florida Championship Wrestling (WWE’s development territory), they too break the mould of what it means to be a Diva. Girls like Paige & Skyler Moon are not the cute as pie Divas we’ve become accustomed too, much like our very own AJ. Current Divas Kaitlyn & Naomi also break the stereotype of what it means to be a Diva. I believe these girls could be the foundation of a new era in WWE, and alongside the likes of Eve, Natalya & Beth Phoenix, we could see a new dawning of a change of perception in WWE Divas. However, these fantasies of a great Divas division can only start with a push on television, and AJ’s push to a main role on TV could be the start.

So, is the idea of AJ being a One Diva Revolution a bold concept? In some ways, it is- it doesn’t take one Diva to change an entire division. However, her unique look and personality could be the beginning of something special for all the Divas that are left on the side (which is ridiculous considering there is 7 hours of WWE TV that needs to be filled). Providing a foundation for the future is needed, and AJ could be the building block we all desperately want for the Divas to prosper like they did a decade ago.

The most searched WWE Diva on Google the past six months and the current Raw General Manager, AJ Lee joined Chad Dukes as part of her recent media blitz.  Listen to the interview to hear AJ discuss the transition from in-ring performer to a big time on air character, her Raw 1000 wedding, the Punk-Bryan-Kane love triangle, WWE’s social media push, and her visit to Marvel Headquarters.
